How to Add or Change a Super Admin for Merchant Center

Understand Business Manager super-admin access, add a replacement carefully, and verify individual Google service permissions.

For a Merchant Center account connected to Business Manager, super-admin access is managed through Business Manager. Google’s guidance says you cannot directly add a new super admin through Merchant Center’s ordinary user-management workflow.

Before changing access, distinguish the business-level role from an admin role on a specific Merchant Center account.

Identify the existing setup

Confirm which Business Manager profile is connected, who the current super admins are, and which Merchant Center account belongs to the business.

Record connected services and the person responsible for each. This matters during a handover because an outgoing person may hold several independent roles.

Do not begin by removing the only person who can manage the transition.

Add the replacement

Google’s Business Manager instructions describe opening People and access, choosing Add person, entering the recipient’s email address, and sending an invitation.

Use the intended business-controlled identity and confirm it with the recipient. Keep a record of what the handover is meant to cover.

An invitation is only one step; the recipient must complete the required acceptance.

Verify service access separately

Google’s super-admin guidance warns that adding a new super admin does not automatically give admin access to linked accounts such as Merchant Center or Business Profile.

Some Google help pages describe roles differently across connected account contexts. For a handover, rely on the permissions visible in each actual service and verify them directly.

Test the tasks the replacement must perform rather than assuming a role name proves complete access.

Remove the outgoing person after validation

Once the replacement can perform the necessary work, review whether the outgoing person should lose Business Manager access, Merchant Center access, and permissions in other linked services.

Google notes that removing a super admin does not automatically remove access to linked accounts. Those permissions need their own review.

Check verification dependencies and integration ownership before finalizing removal.

Avoid a fragile ownership structure

Use named accounts, documented responsibilities, and more than one appropriate business recovery path.

A temporary contractor should not become the only person capable of administering the business setup. Equally, granting broad permissions to every collaborator creates unnecessary confusion.

Match the role to the actual responsibilities.

A handover should use the correct recipient identity and supported invitation process.

What proves the transfer worked?

Verified access in Business Manager and each relevant service, followed by a review of the outgoing person’s remaining permissions.
